Dear Max – not all books get it right; in fact most books are written by the victors who have a particular slant.
Wouldn’t our Allied spies be watching carefully so as to avoid a repeat of 9 million deaths on the battlefield if not a whole lot worse?
You are of course using an analogy when talking about “coach and horses” but in the real world there are groups like lawyers, medical doctors and the such who make a living; i.e. money looking for infractions which go beyond someone riding a horse on a steeple chase, being distracted by a beautiful woman in the stands and falling off, to building a world class Luftwaffe.
Do you think they were all on drugs?
Do you think people like General Smuts were simply distracted writing books such as Holism & Evolution?
Let’s be real. Treaties, especially one such as the VPT were entered into with very serious thought. Do you think they were simply naive and believing that Germany would abide by the strict prohibitions to rearm?
Best regards,
Gary

Dear Gary, whole books have been written on this subject. Short answer is that Germany sort of abided by prohibitions in the 1920s, then Hitler drove a coach and horses through them in the 1930s. Best wishes, Max Hastings
