Veteran Joe Zettler, mom’s first husband. Flew with the Flying Tigers, shot down twice.

    I regret I never probed for details about this even more than most things.
    There were tigers outside the hut after one shoot down.
    He started out as a pilot trainee but crashed on landing and became a navigator (?).
    Went to the Asian front from reluctance to bomb Germany.
    That’s all I can remember.

      Mary Haverstick mom was such a great story teller. Often the color distracted from the facts but if I had her back I wouldn’t let her get away with it on a couple of topics.
      Re: the plane crash I remember she intimated to me it was part of Joe’s basically careless attitude. I even wondered if there were a couple beers involved from her affect. We’ll never know.

        Tony Haverstick oh no. Sorry, I can’t tell from the narrative: did Zettler survive being shot down? Or did he die in the war?

          Sue Newman he survived both shoot downs but tragically died in a car crash only a couple of years after returning home. Joe was the father to both my older brothers. Mom remarried after Joe’s death and later had me.

            Mary Haverstick oh. So sorry. What a sad story. Sorry, I don’t mean to be nosy. When I get a whiff of a story I always gotta find out what happens in the end. I write, and as you can imagine, I can’t bring myself to “cheat the narrative.”

      His parents (snd possibly him at age 1) immigrated from Bavaria +\- 20 years. They spoke German at home. I don’t know what the elder brother’s attitude was. At any rate, no matter how much you detested Hitler I suppose bomber navigator for a raid on your home would be a little tough. The napalm drenching (English) with a secondary ignition bombing (American) firebombing of cultural centers and civilian populations had not yet begun so that wasn’t the rub. Churchill himself said terrorizing civilians and burning down the significant cultural centers was his goal.

      Mary Haverstick did you see my question?
      My father Bernie was a most impressive Allied Fighter Bomber Pilot who conducted all his miraculous 71 dive bombing missions over the rugged terrain of northern Italy and while expert on the British Spitfire flew all 71 in the beloved American built P40-Kittyhawk.
      This is the first I hear of an American unwilling to bomb Germany.
      Surely you asked your mom why that was?

      and as far as reluctance to bomb humans and their cities whatever the cause is not as rare as you think. Never heard of it? Haven’t you heard dozens of vets discuss it, sometimes with tears?

      Tony Haverstick , I have heard of conscientious objectors, of course.
      But you would think that such a person wouldn’t become a pilot?
      He could have just stayed home?
      Why was it okay to go fight the Japanese but not the Nazis?

      He wasn’t a conscientious objector! He was eager to fight for his country. He had the choice of killing and destroying his own town and neighbors or killing and destroying people he never heard of. He choose the latter.
      I was an ethics professor and this choice seems perfectly natural.
      I suppose you could say killing is killing whether it’s you brother or some random aggressor and that may be true from somebody’s, maybe God’s, point of view. In classroom you could argue that. It’s not gonna work real well on planet Earth.

      I gathered from the earlier post of Mary’s that her mom only had her in the second marriage?

        Gary Gevisser we are brother and sister- our mom remarried Bill Haverstick, who adopted my brothers and ten years later mom and dad had me. Taking on his name was the custom
        Back in the 1950s.

      Gary Gevisser we’re brother and sister. But on for genetic purposes half-brother and sister. The remarriage occurred pretty quickly. A little abrupt from this child’s initial response: all of a sudden there was this guy I hardly knew hollering down the stairs, can you keep it quite down there?!
      The legal adoption of the boys by Haverstick was immediate.

      Tony Haverstick, you appear to be in the book binding business or you at least have it as a hobby.
      When you scroll down on my fb wall, you see the photo above from November 2014 in Florence that my father flew over regularly and visited often, and the owners of that book binding business were eager to start printing and binding my book immediately and all I did was give them a brief outline, which was all verbal.
      I never did give them the “green light” because events in the real world kept changing but the goal posts remained in place; namely, to expose those primarily responsible for all the chaos and waste.

      Mary Haverstick, you too would know that if you could figure out a way to back both sides to war which is easy if you can supply weapons, as well as get away with it, and do so without it bothering your conscience, you would be the richest and most powerful person in the world.
      That is why I decided upon completing my university economics-finance-law studies to join the “Masters of Disguise” German-South African Oppenheimers who are the focus of scholarly Professor Edward Jay Epstein’s epic 1978 nonfiction book The Diamond Invention which is available free on The Internet.
      Mary I saw something in your fb profile about “Masters of Disguise”.
      One of the first questions that might come to mind is how come this extraordinarily interesting and well written book isn’t on everyone’s bookshelf?
      Obviously future clients of mine, Simon & Schuster, thought enough of it to publish it in 1982.
      You own the entire game when you control the monies, including Cryptos and the mineral resources and you have also perfected over the years how to hide your ownership by placing stooges in charge; and many, such as Jeff Bezos, simply not smart enough to have figured it out on his own because again he was too full of himself, not realizing that his Wall Street buddies, who backed Amazon.com, wouldn’t have kept Bezos’ business plan to themselves knowing that it was just going to be a question of time before the Waltons of Walmart found out; and no matter how many months behind, even years, the Waltons and their friends could stop Bezos dead in his tracks.
      That brings me to how the SA Oppenheimers go about interfering in the election process.
      Do the two of you have any ideas?
      Also bringing us into the very moment and helping not only make sense of everything but to fix the problems that are destroying the little green remaining of the planet is to look at the last post from yesterday on my fb wall, “You come back as the next to the last breath” which is followed by a link
      to my Tweet earlier in the day to Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, a fellow South African who was not expected to succeed; and when he did, the SA Oppenheimers-Deutsche Bank-Glencore simply made the necessary adjustments.
      It is foolish to dismiss coincidences as mere random events; and even if one does so, the power behind them remains no less powerful.

      I was scanning your posts and repeat something re: climate change I read from an matter-of-fact oceanographer last week pointing out the possibility that within a hundred years the plankton may die to ocean warming. In which case the oxygen would revert to deadly low oxygen levels in killing us all and most of our friend species. Very quickly according to this guy. Now THAT might get people’s attention!

      Gary Gevisser loads of valuable books, ancient and otherwise, were immersed. Bringing a book book from that state is one of the hardest jobs. I talked to the chief archivist at the Folger who was there as an untrained volunteer. Happened to be in Europe as I recall and found a helluva good career .
      Hard to get the details thirty years later. There were volunteers from all the world, he said. Also the technique of freezing until the days or weeks of restoration per volume can come up became more commonplace.

      Tony Haverstick, yes the plankton devastation is cataclysmic and why I maintain that we have, at tops, 25 years remaining having in the space of 100 years destroyed 75% of the green space and less than 24% remaining.

      Mary Haverstick, I see you grow sunflowers. I’m sitting in the kitchen area of our stone cabin in the Cleveland National Forest, just east of San Diego, looking out into the back garden that borders the 420,000 acre forest, and my most expert oil painter wife’s sunflower painting is directly in front, and the scenery on either side is spectacular even if the light was not perfect right now.
